Commissioned for Chamber Music America's New Jazz Works program, The Last Desert
explores textures inspired by geographic imagery, imagining the rebuilding of societal bonds
in a future world where the new climate mandates cooperation for survival. Building upon
the success of 2016's Radiate, The Last Desert brings back Supercell, a sextet
that has been working together for the better part of a decade. The music is a tight weave
of contemporarily composed structures that move between poignant melodic ideas, and rhythmic
frameworks that feature the vibrant and unique improvising abilities of artists in the group.
